*updated:* Ginger Ale 2, Root Beer 3

Part of the raison d'etre of this blog is to chronicle Danny's continuing adventures in soda-making. For Christma-Hannu-Solstice-Versary this year, I got him a book and some equipment for making soda at home. It's been a dream of his. And while we've had some success, it's definitely a work in progress.

Meyer Lemon and Sage Vegan Ice Cream

Oh Berkeley Bowl, how do I love thee? Let me count the gleaming bag of Meyer Lemons on sale for $1.79, just beckoning me to use our new-ish and still exciting ice cream maker

But how to do you justice? Creaminess, yes, but nothing overbearing. Not too much coconut milk. And a savory flavor to mingle with.

What goes with Meyer lemon, I wonder? Google turns up a recipe for [non-vegan] Meyer Lemon Sage Olive Oil Cake. Yes! But that's easier done in cake than in ice cream. Olive oil and lemon sorbet seems basically like salad dressing on ice (minus the mustard), and what's to keep it from separating into unpleasant oily goo?

Why Vegans Should Care About "Modernist Cuisine"

Ok, so there's this book that just came out that's got me thinking about the overlap between science and cooking. It's called "Modernist Cuisine," and as far as I can tell, it's pretty much insane. By which  I mean spectacular, incredible, and revolutionary. Perhaps especially so for vegans.

Introductions

Ok hi, welcome to the blog. Basically, Danny and I have been doing lots of fun experiments in the kitchen lately, and I thought it would be a good idea to keep track of them in a thoroughly public way. And maybe we'll somehow get famous.

Also I have a fancy new camera, and I want to force myself to practice taking good photos. Like of the food we make.

We cook a lot. This isn't about just cooking, though just cooking is great. This is about science. About experiments. About pushing our limits, going beyond the recipes, about research and development, about creativity, fun, and art.

And tastiness.

Sweet, glad we got that out of the way. Onwards!
